Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

This exam measures the Japanese language skills and basic academic knowledge (science, general subjects, mathematics) required of international students hoping to enter Japanese (undergraduate) universities. The test can be taken twice a year (June and November), in Japan or overseas in 18 cities in 14 countries and regions. Select the subjects you'll be tested on according to what the school of your choice requires.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

This exam measures and certifies the Japanese language proficiency of non-native Japanese language speakers. It is used as a condition for entrance exams by each university, and can be taken both in and outside of Japan. There are various benefits to taking the exam, including gaining school credits, fulfilling graduation requirements, preferential treatment by employers, social qualifications, etc.

Immigration Procedures

How to apply

The educational institution you'll be joining will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status from the Immigration Bureau. Once granted this Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status, the prospective international student can apply for a visa at a Japanese Embassy overseas.

What you'll need for immigration

  • Admissions permission notice from the Japanese educational institution at which you'll study
  • Passport
  • Visa issued from a Japanese Embassy overseas
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Resident Status (when granted)
